INSTANT PORTRAIT #43

This is it guys. The last image (or images) of this series. I'm not even sure how I feel about it being that it was just something to put into a blog, but I have to say that it was fun while it lasted. Thought such a failed project I realized that it is something I could use for next year. The Instax format really works if you want to invest in it. The amount of time I put into it for this year wasn't enough to even think of it being in a portfolio. However, I'm definitely impressed of the results and possibilities of it being something I can use for the years to come. Instant photography is something I'll be focusing more on in the next few years.

I just want to say thank you everyone in regards to supporting me and this blog. I hope that next year will be so much better ya know?

Simsbury, Ct / December 2016

This guy has to be one of the coolest dudes on the planet. Very much in touch with music, loves to travel, hang out and act like a kid. He's always been a dude who never let life run him down and that's something I'm very much influenced by. I love the fact that he's one of those guys who is also caring, cynical, and explosive. Conversations with him are pretty damn awesome and I miss him already.

LST LVS - 2 SONG DEMO

Thursday, December 7, 2017

I finally gained the courage to release these songs to the world. At one point I had plans to put these songs in a bigger project, but found that they're demonstrations of what's to come. It took about 3 months to find out how I wanted to approach it. Here they are.

The "2 Song Demo" is a small batch of ideas that came together as a foundation of how I will be directing this music project. For awhile I wanted to write music so that vocalists can put in their part, but found it difficult to find anyone who was willing to take the challenge. As I scoured different musical plains throughout the months an epiphany came telling me that I need not to worry about anyone putting their two cents onto my music. I could simply do it myself instrumentally. From then on I felt free and felt replenished.

The next project will certainly combine photography and music as concept for 2018. What I plan to do is write a song a month, take pictures on one roll of film a month, and process them all together to make a (hopefully) vinyl record and a book. I will be hyper focusing on this project all throughout 2018.

The record will be mixed and mastered, the images will be well edited and the production of the whole project will involve people that I need and love. I'm most certain that this project will be one of my biggest ones to date.

However, the time the project will take full effect I will be documenting it through either digital pictures or Instax. This project will be big for me and I will have to focus as much as I can.

Thank you all for your support and your continued support through this blog and other platforms I'm currently active on. I know that I don't have a wide audience, but this helps me do what I need to do.

I'M WRITING THIS ON 11/29/17. THE DAY BEFORE MY BROTHER'S BDAY

Friday, December 1, 2017

At this moment I'm at a really happy point in my life. I know I have good things ahead of me and I know that things will finally be alright. In a few days I'll be heading back to Connecticut with a piece of mind that I haven't had in awhile. And with most of the negativity I've had over the years I think it's time that my dreams start to come to fruition. I know that being realistic is something I'd have to consider, but at this moment I think things can really happen.

I'm fortunate to be around friends and family who support me all the way. I think that most of them see the potential of who I am and what I want to do in my life. I try to encourage them to shoot for the stars as well. I know it may not be easy, but I think that things can really work out. I have someone that I'm seeing at the moment and I have people that want me back to Cali. I want to live back the life I lived when I was here in the Bay and I want to share it with someone. And I'm sure I'll be able to do it with the person I'm seeing right now.

Life is starting to shape up. I know that things will be hard, but I think it'll be worth it if I just kept believing. I know that my ups and downs can come around, but this time I think I'm more stable than ever before. I just hope I can keep this momentum going as much as I can. Just believe guys.

For the last remaining posts I'm gonna try to remember when it was taken because to tell you the truth a lot of it was a blur to me. This person was doing some sort of petitioning I believe (I can't recall and there's probably a reason why I don't remember). I had asked for her picture and she was kinda suspect about it. I basically told her that it was an image for my diary. She was okay with it I guess and I ended up taking her picture. I can tell that this person was way awkward, but it kinda gave the charm to the photo.

WHAT MY PLANS ARE FOR NEXT YEAR

Friday, November 17, 2017

For next year I have a couple of goals I want to set for myself.

1. Start getting more fit
2. Work out harder at the Gym
3. Rework my diet
4. Finish up editing much of the film I've shot
5. Dedicate all black and white photographs for the blog
6. More Instant Photography
7. More digital photography
8. Working with more clients
9. Selling more of my work for a good cause
10. Write a song every month
11. Be a freelance musician
12. Find a job in the Bay Area
13. Move to the Bay Area prepared
14. Find a therapist
15. Start doing more community like things
16. Make more friends
17. Talk to more artists
18. Create a podcast
19. Write more
20. Be happy and never give up

So far things haven't been as bad. I was, for the most part, assuming that I'd be down and out dealing with things the wrong way. But I'm out here trying to make positive choices rather than kill myself with bullshit. I can't say that it's all easy-peazy, but I'm doing the best I can to figure it out one step at a time. I'm so used to rushing into things and feeling burnt out on it later on. I really don't know how to groove anymore and that's what I'm trying to do again. I shouldn't be in a rush.

However, routine has been a big thing for me. I've been wanting to fall into routines that help me set my mind straight. Not only that I'm trying to get my finance straight as well. Not buying unnecessary shit (which I don't really do anyway) and having fun with money when it's appropriate. I can't say "fuck it" anymore because I'm trying to be a fucking adult in 2017. I don't even know how to be an adult. It's dumb, but whatever.

But overall I'm trying to make better choices and trying to see a brighter future of 2018. I know things are going to be rough, but I have to be prepared and I have to be ready for whatever comes my way.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC

Friday, November 3, 2017

A post shared by Art Bueno (@buenopower) on

As I start to play more guitar I'm realizing how much of my photography is taking a back seat. Of course this is just another one of those ruts, but I really do need to get myself back into the grind. I gotta be honest though.... 2017 was probably the shittiest year I've ever endured.

But I have proposed an idea to myself to create a project that will, hopefully, combine both music and photography once again. Next year I want to create a 12 month project where I revisit the same concept as Roll Call. This, however, will be in black and white. The music portion will be a song a month. I have to dedicate myself to that song and finish it before the month ends. They have to be detailed as best as it can.

I can only hope that this will work out for me. I have to be dedicated to this craft. I gotta do what I can man. And I hope that this will help me do photography more and more.

8 YEARS

Friday, October 27, 2017

It's been eight years since this blog had started. And since my departure from my former partner the blog has now become a record of what my life has been like being with her. To be honest I haven't been able to look at these past posts just for the fact that some of the images kind of hurt to look at. But that's life I suppose.

Throughout the years the blog underwent many changes. The logos, the content, the process and the locations were all a factor as to how the blog sits today. Through it all I was willing to put out what I was doing and how I was doing it. I still continue to be married to this blog and I couldn't see it being dismantled anytime soon. Much of my heart and soul was put into it. I might as well keep it going as long as I can.

I have many prospects coming up this next year. The blog, I hope, will remain the same, but the content will greatly change. More of my work will be digital this time around. I think that I need to undergo the practice of shooting more and more. I have a lot of film that needs to be developed as well and with money being tight I don't have the means to even think about developing the rolls. I might be able to take care of these in small batches, but that's pretty much it.

CURRENT STATUS

Friday, October 20, 2017

A post shared by Art Bueno (@buenopower) on

Finding a new job, finding a new home, rekindling relationships I had to abandon, feeling isolated, waking up with depression, working as much as I can, working out as much as I can, eating better, feeling more confident, working hard at art, not working at all, youtube videos, video games, still straight edge, still worried about my future, and what am I gonna do when I don't have money?

These are some of the thoughts I've been having over the last few months. Waking up each day till the night with this mindeset is taxing on my body and mind. But I figure this is normal. I hate being hungry, I hate not being able to know if I have gas in my car and I hate the fact that money is really tight. These are things I don't like to think about, but are things I need to be thinking about.

It's fucking annoying and knowing that I'm in this state isn't something to be proud of. But I know that for sure I'll make it out being happier than I was before. It's a long journey and I hate hearing that shit, but it's the truth.

BUENO POWER VLOG #25 - IT'S REALLY HAPPENING

Monday, September 25, 2017

I'm in the process of divorce.

Just writing that looks and feels odd. And to tell you the truth this whole blog has been based on my experience with my former significant other. To write such a thing feels ridiculous and I'm not sure how I can take it.... but I'm here doing what I can to take those steps.

This blog has been undergoing many changes since its inception. Good and bad designs of logos, decent to shitty pictures, thoughts about things I do and don't care about, and what it felt like to be married. All continue to do that, but will be doing that while being single.

This place allowed me (and I hope it continues to) the freedom to say and do whatever I want. Most of time, however, I've done my best to set goals every year to display a continuous body of work that I may or may not use for future endeavors. About 10 to 20 percent of these images get used for some type of body of work in my portfolio or any gallery showings. A portion of those images are of my former wife smiling or not. And now looking at these images of her and anything attached to her it's almost heartbreaking to even look at.

Marriage is built by two individuals who love and care for each other. In some circumstances it's a way to gain some benefits from other family members while others see it as something to do. In my view I've always thought it was about showing my worth to that other person. Showing that person that I'll put you in front and me way back. That may have been a bad idea at the start, but I've always been the type to be selfless in that way. All I can really say is that the value of your human existence should be considered at the fullest. Share the love, but also focus on what's best for you. Being at the center of the stage is weird, but it's something I have to do.

At the beginning of October I'll be posting regularly again. This time only on Mondays. Because of what's been going on I'm trying my best to make good art again. I feel that most of my pictures and even songs I've written have been sooo half-assed. Not only that I'm going to try and do weekly vid posts as well. It's only a matter of time until I start making time for this stuff and have it become a priority.

For next year I'm going to go full digital. This time I'm going to focus on black and white photography. I have a lot of film that I have developed and underdeveloped that needs to be worked on. From there I'm going to decide on making a book of sorts and see if anything that I've photographed has a rhythm. I really need to get back into doing what I love to do, because it's been years since I've been able to do something like this full time.

This is a portrait of one of the artists that I took during the Open Hartford Studios event. This was probably the time I started to understand how the camera worked. Awesome person that I probably would never ever see again.

STILL LIFE #22 - MESQUITO NET

I love the textures of blankets and how the effect of light sort of changes its shape. This is something I've been studying for quite some time and I think I want to make a project out of it for sure. Let's hope that it turns into something.

I THINK I NEED A BREAK FROM THE INTERNET

Thursday, June 1, 2017

Over the course of the months I've noticed that the first thing I look at is my phone. I check my Instagram, Facebook, Tumblr & whatever email I have for about a good 15 minutes and proceed to get ready. During those 15 minutes of browsing I start to feel jaded. I feel jaded because there's posts of bad news, happiness, stress, sales, accomplishments, and other garbage that I cannot even explain. I could only imagine what it'd be like if a I had a twitter account.

I'm gonna try to take a break from looking through these Social Media platforms. I'm starting to notice that I'm dependent on reading about other peoples' lives rather than mine. And I think that's a bad thing. I need to center myself again. I shouldn't be feeling this way.

The Wife / Middletown, Ct / 2015

The summers in Connecticut are often hot, humid and boring. I don't really do a lot doing the summers because I'm just whatever about it. I don't know. I think I'm turning old for a lot of shit these days and can't really find enjoyment on anything. But whatever. I hope this summer brings something different to the table.

INSTANT PORTRAIT #22

Scan-161113-0022

East Hartford, Ct / December 2016

I photographed Dominique awhile ago for some photos for a dude at a hotel (that's as far as I'm going to go with that). She's a pretty sweet woman trying to get by in life and get a good education. Currently going to school, but I forgot what though.

STILL LIFE #21 - BLANKET

The sun's movement is rapidly changing here and I'm starting to see it shift to different areas of the house. The patio seems a little different as well as the kitchen. Not much activity going on in the other areas of the house, but I'm managing to figure out different ways to use it. Sometimes you just got to work with what you got.

Just recently this dude just graduated. I don't really talk to him much, but I'm sure that he's been quite busy with things. This was taken in Lowell, Ma on the top of one of the steepest hills. I kinda miss photographing Lowell.

I don't know this persons' name, but he comes to the river in the morning and I see him every once in a while. He usually cleans up the river park. Homeless, he just gets by as much as he can I guess. I wish I could do more for him, but you know... what can you do?

STILL LIFE #20 - WINDOW COVER

Friday, May 19, 2017

Cromwell, Ct / March 2017

And as my "study" continues I'm starting to see the behavior of the light change day by day. As we headed further into Spring & Summer I've notice some movement of the light changing through the kitchen and house. It's hard to decipher when I should be present for the light, how long I should wait & what subject I should photograph. But this is part of the exercise I guess.

GOALS FOR THE NEXT FEW WEEKS

Thursday, May 18, 2017

I'm gonna try to do my best to figure out how to increase movement on both the blog and my distribution. My current job looks like it's about to crumble and I'm at that point where I'm ready to just leave the damn place and figure shit out myself. Of course, it'd be dumb just to suddenly quit without having any kind of backup plan, but I intend to get something going before my departure.

But I'm in that moment where I'm scared of what may come. This is almost the same feeling I had when I was unemployed and didn't have anything going on. This was about 5 years ago that I had the issue of being trapped at home with no one to talk to and no one to hang out with. It was lonely those years and I'm surprised that I had gotten over that hurdle. The crappy part is that I've built this foundation with some of these people that I call friends and it's been so awesome to share some experiences with them. I'm just afraid that I'll be going through that same thing again when it's all over.

I'm talking crazy, I know, but I can't help feel that the future looks a little bleak right now. The state is currently under high alert on the budget, our grading rubric with DSS is VERY rigid, and on top of that the workplace is starting to feel more like a jail cell. It's absolutely nuts.

I'm not sure what will come of the next few weeks, but jeez man.. it look like it's not going to be very good.

STILL LIFE #19 - BLANKET

Friday, May 12, 2017

At Home / Cromwell, Ct / March 2017

There's a sun roof that was built in our condo. One of the best things about it is seeing the light emit different areas of the living room. The couch gets the most attention from the light while on the sun's time to sleep it emits around where the dvd rack. This image is part of a crochet'd blanket that was given to us awhile back. I love the texture of it and how the light sort of brings out this fantastic pattern. I'll most likely feature this blanket in the blogs to come.

For a bit (and maybe still) I've been on the kick of photographing balloons. The thing that fascinates me with balloons is not only their shapes, but their colors. I don't know what it is about them. Of course, this picture is so expired that you can barely see the colors of the balloons. But whatever man..

This is, I believe, the owner of the restaurant Triple A Diner. I don't see him often and I don't go there often, but there's something about that diner that has this light that I love so much. I come here to get a bite before I head to work when I do my crazy shifts.

STILL LIFE #18 - STEMS

Friday, May 5, 2017

Cromwell, Ct / March 2017

From the first day I've learnt about him Andre Kertesz has been one photographer that has stayed consistent in my life. And as of late I've been thinking about his work through these still life's. It's hard to imagine that I'd get back on the horse with b&w and since I've shot years of color it's been pretty interesting trying to decipher what subject looks good in this workflow.

A lot of my subjects (for now at least) are of plants. They have their own way of growing up in the world and have their own way of making impressions. It's funny how much a plant can show you its feelings just by the way they grow.

TAKE CARE OF THE ONES YOU LOVE

Thursday, May 4, 2017

I recently went to the front page of Reddit and saw this thread appear. The Redditor who posted this link shared a website of her friend who recently committed suicide. Claire Marley was a photographer based out of Shawnee, KS who was interested in photographing friends and her surroundings. She was a transfer student from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design to the University of Kansas. She was also a teacher's assistant for the Shawnee Mission School District.

Most of the photographs seen in the portfolio are images of what could be her friends and surroundings. A lot these images are candid moments welcoming the audience a peak into her personal life. Some shot on film and most shot on digital, but still showcases that "at home" aesthetic. I can't say that her portfolio is strong with a good narrative flow, but I can say that these images were certainly a great start to what could have been strong bodies of work.

It's unfortunate this artist left the world early. It brings the issue that having good mental health is important. I'm not sure what her struggle was, but man it must've been so bad to the point that she wanted the pain to go away. It's okay to see a therapist. It's okay to talk to your loved ones about this kind of thing. It may seem like you're alone, but you're not and there are ways to get help.

If you or anyone who is struggling with this is please call for help.

To tell you the truth reading this thread spawned some memories that I've endured when I was young. I've lost friends through this and mental health is really important for me and my loved ones. Get help if you need it. You're not weak if you do so.

This guitarist was pretty good. I loved the amount of control he had playing some of the parts of the songs. Slight sweeps here and there, weird chord grips, and the clean twinkly tone that I'm just so down for.
