SOMETHING LIKE HAILS

Haleigh - Location Lighting Class / AAU San Francisco, Ca / December 2011

This was for an assignment that I had to complete before deadline that day. It was done really quick, but I knew how I wanted the shot to look. Because of this class I was able to learn the different techniques of off camera flash. This also helped me learn how to use gels appropriately. Besides that Haleigh was a big help for most of my assignments. Kinda sucks I didn't get a chance to know her more than I wanted to. I can't find any of her work around that I could look at, but from what I remembered her work really dealt with personal issues. It was raw and honest. I hope she's still shooting.

The Rectory / Middletown, Ct / May 2013

Beautiful moments like these don't come too often. I'd like to think that I had somehow imagined this shot. The situation appeared as me and my fiance met up with people in the rectory to discuss stuff that I can't really remember. The lighting was beautiful and was one of those moments I wouldn't have been able to see again.

Strutting the Street / New York, Ny / March 2013

The things that you find while you walk around a city. These photos are a series of images I took from the day I visited New York to see Gus Powell. Those rolls really had content I was satisfied with. Hope to go back to the city again soon.

THAT LITTLE HOUSE ON THAT LITTLE HILL

THAT LITLE HOUSE ON THAT LITTLE HILL

East Rd Housing / Middletown, Ct / April 2013

I don't know how many time I've taken pictures of this house. I pass by it almost everyday. This particular shot, however, made me feel a little different. I'm sure it's nothing special, but the mood of the light, the angle... I guess it's the representation of what Connecticut is to me.

I've always been one to photograph spot like light casting on stuff. There's nothing really special about it, but I just think it's cool looking. Give it a try. Photographing this kind of stuff is fun.

CURRENT ROLLING STONE COVER

This issue will be released sometime soon as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is the front cover of Rolling Stone magazine. If you guys don't remember he and his brother are responsible for the Boston Marathon bombings last April. Since it's previewed release the public has criticized Rolling Stone for making Dzhokhar seem "rockstar" like in his appearance. Even a few carriers are denying to put this issue out on newsstands. With the controversial front cover the inside content, however, explain a bit about the bomber.

Of course the Boston public and people involved with the April bombing will feel sensitive about this. I mean look at it! It totally glamourizes Dzhokhar as a "model" of some sort. Maybe it was a poor choice to choose this image, but there's a lot of underlying dialogue here. He was just a kid.

I don't really know what I'm trying to say with this. It's unfortunate this all occurred, but I wonder what the Rolling Stone motives were. Are they trying to humanize him? Show a pretty face who ended up becoming a "monster"? Shock value? I wonder what the statement will say in the weeks to come. Let's just hope it's a good one.

THE "ZINE" NEWSSTAND

Wednesday, July 17, 2013

This was posted recently on my Tumblr dashboard from the oh so amazing Fanzines. Apparently a few people decided to open up a zine shop in one of the old New York Newsstands that closed down. This has to be one of the most punk rock, yet, awesome ideas I've ever seen. If you live in New York (or happen to visit) and love zines I suggest you check out this location and see what you can find. Support DIY publications!

At Home - Walking Around / Middletown, Ct / June 2013

Not sure what the relationship is between these images. I just know that it made sense somehow. I'm really loving the focus of color these days. It's allowing me to be a bit more picky at what I'm shooting. I'm just not firing away like I used to. I'm taking the time to look at the scene. This should definitely help in the long run.

Through the Avenues / New York, Ny / Summer 2012

I'm not sure why I take pictures of people on their phone. They don't seem to be aware of what's going on around them. It's a photograph about nothing really, but just the atmosphere of the photo really pulled me in. I miss the city.

Newsroom

Monday, July 15, 2013

I've recently started watching this series and I must admit that I'm hooked. I was introduced to this series last Saturday and it suddenly drew me in. I was able to catch up to the latest episode (we finally have HBO).

I urge anyone to check out this series. It means a lot to me as the aspect of good news hasn't really existed in a long time. It also gives you a walkthrough of how certain subjects get produced. Obviously there's drama integrated in, but Newroom isn't just a bunch of whiney people not getting their way. It's a show that features a team who want to get the story straight and work to showcasing news that matters. I wish we still have that here today.

So G Coffee Parking Lot / Glastonbury, Ct / April 2013

I've had these pictures sitting on my hard drive for awhile. Not sure why it took me this long to post it, but I figured since it's hot today I would share. These images were taken in April. Slight road construction being done during capture. I was really focused on the colors. The yellows, pinks, grays, blues were amazing.

A Moment with Alana Paterson

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

Lately, editing has been sort of a drag and I haven't been out of my apartment very much. Not much desire to do anything when you don't have a car or have friends to pick you up and take you places. So, most of the week I've been trying to find jobs and trying to gain more inspiration. I don't know what interests me to this woman. Her photography is simple, composed in such a plain way, but then again her work seems to show a level a love that one can't really decipher. Her images are about life. There's no crazy things going on.... it's just simple images about life. This has been quite the theme for me as I live in the country. I'm almost back to the roots of my youth living in farm town that's 1 mile radius wide. Maybe these are the things I should be looking at rather than trying to find photographs that I'm so used to.

Check out her work at alanapaterson.com. She's definitely worth checking out.

A Moment with Megan McIsaac

Monday, July 8, 2013

"it has been a while since i have found myself inspired at the tap of my computer keyboard. my typewriter hasnt seen much life either though, but my notebook is as happy as a clam. life has been spectacularly complicated and challenging lately, and my face often wakes with sore cheeks from smiling and laughing so much the night before. i feel somewhat alive again, which means what? i suppose i feel much more conscious, despite my lack of yogic exercise or any exercise at all. conscious of particular things… my life began again when i started making photographs all day again. it will take some time to adjust, it had been a while. distracted by the daily grind of making drinks for people too rude to even ask how anyone else is feeling. too rude to respond when i ask how they are. now i ask myself how i feel each morning, trying to stay on top of things and learning how to be my own boss (just go with the flow.) it feels like the first time, but i guess there are no repeats in life and i must re-learn this here task. wake up, drink something caffeinated, pick out and play a record, pet linus, open computer and stay focused for a few hours. afterwards, go outside. make more photographs. if i can manage to pay my bills by selling prints and photographing strangers, i won’t need much more to live on, i can spend the majority of my days with a camera and good company.

i spent the past week in south dakota, taking part in the ceremony of love of two of the most beautiful individuals i know, now together forever. we spent the days on the black hills wild horse sanctuary, and breathed the same dust as the natives to the land. dancing on the same ground as the sundance. i shot through countless rolls of film as my eyes filled with tears; the wild horses praying to the petroglyphs, the bride and groom running over the hill together, floating naked in the cheyenne, the incredible love of the family and friends that surrounded us…

i need to explore, to roam and adventure. i need a cabin in the woods with a creek running through it. wild turkey, horses, bison, birds… if you ever see my five year plan, finding land to sprawl out on is near the top. we shall see what the reality of that situation becomes. in the next few months you can expect to see the opening of my print shop, some new gallery shows, a few publications i will be sharing photographs in, and all of the usual daily photographs that i make. i am hoping to find myself traveling more, photographing more, and exploring more. no excuses, even if i only have pennies to my name."

I really am a fan of her work. She has a great way of composition. Just beautiful pictures of life as she sees it. After reading this little small snippet it had me realize what I'm doing in life. I don't want to just be stuck here on the computer looking for inspiration. I want to be out there traveling, photographing places I don't know, and going where I feel I need to capture life as I see it.

Hopefully in the coming months I will be able to have what I need to start shooting more again. I've been on this rut just editing photos and not really photographing as much as I should. Connecticut is a tough place to photograph. It isn't easy to compose stuff here, but I'm hoping it will get better soon.

Flowers / Middletown & New Britain, Ct / March - May 2013

I'm not even sure why I take these pictures, but something about them symbolizes something that I can't really explain. Flowers are such a lame subject (and it was my first online zine project too), but I realize that I shoot these things often. They're mainly a good background for designs I want to create, but that's about it.
