Day 244 of 365: A Moment in Lowell

A Moment in Lowell

Today was a bit interesting. I'm back photographing film again to add into a project that I have yet to finish soon. The weather is starting to change and the atmosphere is welcoming me nicely as I snap a bit in the streets. Today was an Olympus OM-PC with a 50mm lens. I'm starting to look for corners again and it's helping me view the situations cinematically. On Sunday I will try to perform this same mindset again as I walk into downtown Lowell in the morning alone. Tomorrow I will be heading to a college my girlfriend attended and graduated from years ago and should be quite the experience. For now... enjoy today's entry..

A Pie Chart That Says A lot About Our Career

I've been seeing this chart on a couple of posts as of late and it's got me wondering: Does the public really think that we just take pictures and have fun? Do we photographers only spend our time just editing, promoting, and learning? So why is it that we just don't take pictures and have fun? Do we need to spend more time promoting our work than take pictures?

These views on photography are quite valid and there's a good amount of work that needs to be done in order for us to make this art become a career. But remember this...

Even though that we have this misconceived view from people and that in the real world much needs to be done to create a career out of photography a good portion of us do enjoy the editing, going to meetings, promoting, blogging, and the like. It is a reality we photographers do face, but for some us we enjoy the amount of work that it takes to get us out their in the world. It can get frustrating at points, but with any kind of art that's what helps grow and learn new things.

So yes... we do have fun and take lots of pictures, but it does require a lot of work to get to where we want to go. It also doesn't mean that we don't enjoy doing all that work... for some people I suppose.

I enjoy the amount of work I have to do in order for me to get me out there. If it means blogging everyday, shooting everyday, promoting, looking for gigs... it's a continuous modus operandi. You learn and take pictures as much as you can, you blog about your work, you promote your work, you take endless amount of hours editing your work. We are not just business, but we do have to talk business. Anyone understand where I'm coming from? Let me know what you think.

A Stroll Around the Neighborhood

We are now in Lowell, Massachusetts hanging out for the whole weekend here. I'm hoping the next few days will be different as I have been in a rut photographically for awhile. I know that photos at home can be quite boring so I will try to initiate something. I brought my film camera in hopes to gather some new work for one of my projects. It should be interesting.

Day 242 of 365: Back and Forth

Back and Forth

It's been quite a day for me. Dropped off my girlfriend for work, had an interview at a bakery, and did some writing to cultivate new ideas for future projects. As of right now I am thinking about what lies ahead for the upcoming semester. I'm seeing a difference in action in this small town and am hoping to create some sort of project out of it. For the rest of the week my girlfriend and I will be spending some time in Massachusetts and will be leaving tomorrow morning. Updates to come soon. For now.. enjoy!

I'm sure some of you are getting slightly tired of seeing photos of just flowers and such on my blog, but for some reason I'm starting to appreciate the whole aspect of it. It's a way to cope with what I've been feeling lately. Since I'm broke this is the only outlet I have. I hope better days come soon...

That Light... Beautiful

As the season starts to turn over the excitement begins. I am already visualizing the fall/winter visuals that my photography is ready for. This is the moment that images seem to shine for me. I love how the light can bring me this cinematic feel and produce these movie like moments that I am such a big fan of. Hurry up fall.... let's go!

A Night with the Girls

Our friends Erica and Lauren had invited my girlfriend and I to dinner and karaoke. It was fun and this was a good opportunity to photograph. I don't usually photograph at night so having a night in the town was a perfect moment to shoot. Thanks ladies! We had fun.

On it Firing Away

Since New Haven is the nearest place where Chase Bank is located from where I live I went ahead and took that trip to deposit my check. I decided to park the car and sort of explore a certain section of the city for my blog entry. Well.. I think I got lucky today. Earlier this morning NBCCT news had done a story about Freshman getting ready to board in the dorms before the semester begins at Yale. Since the morning light was pretty good and certain spots of the town were busy it was a great opportunity to photograph. I think that New Haven will be my way out to photograph some interesting stuff if I start to lose interest in photographing at/near home. Not only that fall is slowly coming through and I'm sure the light will start to change. I had also started getting the backlog of my negs developed so the next few weeks should be pretty interesting.

Born Into Brothels: A Documentary About Calcutta and Children Photographers

Last night I had the opportunity to watch a documentary about kids in Calcutta learn the art of photography with point-and-shoot cameras. Directed by Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman the story is set in the Red Light District as one of the leading areas of illegal activity and prostitution. Eight kids that were selected in the film share their stories of the happy, the sad, and the chaotic lives they live. Each individual documents their life inside and outside their home and is guided by Zana throughout the process. This film is not only amazing, but shows the in-depth look on the creative genius of a kid. To tell you the truth most of the kids have better outlook on framing, compositions, and content than most professional photographers that I know. Beautiful film to watch and I highly recommend you check it out!

Moments of Quiet

Too often I find myself inside my head in moments feeling alone and with no one to talk to. So I take these feelings and try to apply them to the things I photograph everyday. Even though I have my girlfriend here I still feel lonely and out of place. I have no one to really talk to. Today I took a drive and allowed these feelings seep in to what I captured. It was a good day. It was a quiet day.

Late Night Long Exposures

A long time ago my old instructor back in Fresno City College, Ray Arth, told me about a photographer who did these unique long exposure photographs. The photographer had speedlites and flashed certain areas of old buildings with different colors. These exposures gave the abandoned architectures life and beauty we don't usually see with these old things. Soo... I got the idea of doing this again and wanted to see how well I could do photographing this stuff. It was definitely different from what I'm used to, but I really did enjoy it.

Mornings are seriously the best times to shoot. The light seems to create this cinematic imagery that I am so fond of. The apartment complex glowed beautifully. I actually took out my 60D this time and the results were pleasing. I don't think I could give up this camera. It's done to many good things.

Day 227 of 365: On My Spare Time

On My Spare Time

During the week I'm always out there photographing something. Some days it's easy and some days are hard, but I absolutely do the best I can to photograph things that appeal to me. Lately landscapes and architecture have been a big factor in my work as of late. It's hard to find a place to just sit on a corner and photograph people on the street. But that's what you get when you live in a place that sort of sits in a lot of trees. Today's post is just that. I drive around, find something I like and then take a little bit of time to shoot it. I do this on my "Spare Time."

Beautiful Losers: A Documentary on Street Culture

Just today I finally got around watching this film. It was recommended by my old Photo History instructor Lynne Ingersol who is still teaching at the Academy of Art University. Artists such as Ed Templeton and Mike Mills talk about their experiences about growing up as an outcast and understanding the term "DIY." As a photographer I focus on these things not because it's amazing, but to understand their integrity and their motivation to keep creating. It's ugly. It's beautiful. It's passionate. And it's stressful. Not matter what they kept doing something than doing nothing. You can watch the film on full stream by clicking the link below.

Inside/Out

After watching that documentary on Daido Moriyama I had some motivation to shoot again. First I shot around the apartment. The light was good today so certain things seemed interesting enough to shoot. I then went ahead and drove a bit and photographed at a building that has been abandoned for quite some time. During the process I thought about my angles, looked through the viewfinder, and attempted to feel out each image I took. It felt awesome. I hope tomorrow brings the same results.

DAIDO MORIYAMA

Lately photography has been somewhat difficult to comprehend as most of my blogs haven't been too thrilling. I've been falling off the wagon creatively and haven't been motivated to shoot. I remembered hearing this mans name, Daido Moriyama, for awhile , but I never gave the photographer a chance until now. I just finished watching the documentary "Near Equal Moryiama Daido" and I was blown away by the work he creates. The footage talks about his process, his thoughts on photography, analog, digital, personal, and his outlook in life. It's a very interesting story. His work has inspired me and I am so motivated to shoot again. Check out the video above and his photographs below!
