Day 244 of 365: A Moment in Lowell

A Moment in Lowell

Today was a bit interesting. I'm back photographing film again to add into a project that I have yet to finish soon. The weather is starting to change and the atmosphere is welcoming me nicely as I snap a bit in the streets. Today was an Olympus OM-PC with a 50mm lens. I'm starting to look for corners again and it's helping me view the situations cinematically. On Sunday I will try to perform this same mindset again as I walk into downtown Lowell in the morning alone. Tomorrow I will be heading to a college my girlfriend attended and graduated from years ago and should be quite the experience. For now... enjoy today's entry..

A Pie Chart That Says A lot About Our Career

I've been seeing this chart on a couple of posts as of late and it's got me wondering: Does the public really think that we just take pictures and have fun? Do we photographers only spend our time just editing, promoting, and learning? So why is it that we just don't take pictures and have fun? Do we need to spend more time promoting our work than take pictures?

These views on photography are quite valid and there's a good amount of work that needs to be done in order for us to make this art become a career. But remember this...

Even though that we have this misconceived view from people and that in the real world much needs to be done to create a career out of photography a good portion of us do enjoy the editing, going to meetings, promoting, blogging, and the like. It is a reality we photographers do face, but for some us we enjoy the amount of work that it takes to get us out their in the world. It can get frustrating at points, but with any kind of art that's what helps grow and learn new things.

So yes... we do have fun and take lots of pictures, but it does require a lot of work to get to where we want to go. It also doesn't mean that we don't enjoy doing all that work... for some people I suppose.

I enjoy the amount of work I have to do in order for me to get me out there. If it means blogging everyday, shooting everyday, promoting, looking for gigs... it's a continuous modus operandi. You learn and take pictures as much as you can, you blog about your work, you promote your work, you take endless amount of hours editing your work. We are not just business, but we do have to talk business. Anyone understand where I'm coming from? Let me know what you think.

Day 243 of 365: A Stroll Around the Neighborhood

Thursday, August 30, 2012

A Stroll Around the Neighborhood

We are now in Lowell, Massachusetts hanging out for the whole weekend here. I'm hoping the next few days will be different as I have been in a rut photographically for awhile. I know that photos at home can be quite boring so I will try to initiate something. I brought my film camera in hopes to gather some new work for one of my projects. It should be interesting.

Day 242 of 365: Back and Forth

Back and Forth

It's been quite a day for me. Dropped off my girlfriend for work, had an interview at a bakery, and did some writing to cultivate new ideas for future projects. As of right now I am thinking about what lies ahead for the upcoming semester. I'm seeing a difference in action in this small town and am hoping to create some sort of project out of it. For the rest of the week my girlfriend and I will be spending some time in Massachusetts and will be leaving tomorrow morning. Updates to come soon. For now.. enjoy!

Day 241 of 365: Early Skies

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Early Skies

I didn't really do much today. Just stayed home, took my girlfriend to work, and ate. It's going to be a long week.

Day 240 of 365: Lily

Monday, August 27, 2012

I'm sure some of you are getting slightly tired of seeing photos of just flowers and such on my blog, but for some reason I'm starting to appreciate the whole aspect of it. It's a way to cope with what I've been feeling lately. Since I'm broke this is the only outlet I have. I hope better days come soon...

Day 239 of 365: That Light... Beautiful

Sunday, August 26, 2012

That Light... Beautiful

As the season starts to turn over the excitement begins. I am already visualizing the fall/winter visuals that my photography is ready for. This is the moment that images seem to shine for me. I love how the light can bring me this cinematic feel and produce these movie like moments that I am such a big fan of. Hurry up fall.... let's go!

Day 238 of 365: A Night Out with the Girls

Saturday, August 25, 2012

A Night with the Girls

Our friends Erica and Lauren had invited my girlfriend and I to dinner and karaoke. It was fun and this was a good opportunity to photograph. I don't usually photograph at night so having a night in the town was a perfect moment to shoot. Thanks ladies! We had fun.

Day 237 of 365: On it Firing Away

Friday, August 24, 2012

On it Firing Away

Since New Haven is the nearest place where Chase Bank is located from where I live I went ahead and took that trip to deposit my check. I decided to park the car and sort of explore a certain section of the city for my blog entry. Well.. I think I got lucky today. Earlier this morning NBCCT news had done a story about Freshman getting ready to board in the dorms before the semester begins at Yale. Since the morning light was pretty good and certain spots of the town were busy it was a great opportunity to photograph. I think that New Haven will be my way out to photograph some interesting stuff if I start to lose interest in photographing at/near home. Not only that fall is slowly coming through and I'm sure the light will start to change. I had also started getting the backlog of my negs developed so the next few weeks should be pretty interesting.

Day 236 of 365: Accomplished

Thursday, August 23, 2012

Fall is coming, things are happening, I finally got out of bed, and I'm tired. That is all.

Day 235 of 365: Renovations

Wednesday, August 22, 2012

Regular day. Stayed home and made sure the people did the job right.

Born Into Brothels: A Documentary About Calcutta and Children Photographers

Last night I had the opportunity to watch a documentary about kids in Calcutta learn the art of photography with point-and-shoot cameras. Directed by Zana Briski and Ross Kauffman the story is set in the Red Light District as one of the leading areas of illegal activity and prostitution. Eight kids that were selected in the film share their stories of the happy, the sad, and the chaotic lives they live. Each individual documents their life inside and outside their home and is guided by Zana throughout the process. This film is not only amazing, but shows the in-depth look on the creative genius of a kid. To tell you the truth most of the kids have better outlook on framing, compositions, and content than most professional photographers that I know. Beautiful film to watch and I highly recommend you check it out!

Day 234 of 365: Moments of Quiet

Tuesday, August 21, 2012

Moments of Quiet

Too often I find myself inside my head in moments feeling alone and with no one to talk to. So I take these feelings and try to apply them to the things I photograph everyday. Even though I have my girlfriend here I still feel lonely and out of place. I have no one to really talk to. Today I took a drive and allowed these feelings seep in to what I captured. It was a good day. It was a quiet day.

Day 233 of 365: Late Night Long Exposures

Monday, August 20, 2012

Late Night Long Exposures

A long time ago my old instructor back in Fresno City College, Ray Arth, told me about a photographer who did these unique long exposure photographs. The photographer had speedlites and flashed certain areas of old buildings with different colors. These exposures gave the abandoned architectures life and beauty we don't usually see with these old things. Soo... I got the idea of doing this again and wanted to see how well I could do photographing this stuff. It was definitely different from what I'm used to, but I really did enjoy it.

Day 232 of 365: Marathons: An iPhone Story

Sunday, August 19, 2012

Marathons: An iPhone Story

I want to address this first before I get into the discussion with today's entry. I really need to start thinking harder when it comes to making sure I have ALL MY CAMERA EQUIPMENT! EVEN IF IT'S JUST A SIMPLE MEMORY CARD! This in which leads to what I will be talking about today.

Day 231 of 365: Small Runs

Saturday, August 18, 2012

Small Runs

Usual Saturday. Not much to see. Hung out with the girl and watched a full marathon of Avatar: The Last Airbender. Tomorrow I head to Providence, RI to photograph a marathon for the company I work for. For now.. I chill.

Day 230 of 365: Flowers

Friday, August 17, 2012

I like shooting these things. Shooting just simple things. It's bland, boring, and really simple... but I don't know.. there's some character to it... back me up on this?

Progress Report Idea

Day 229 of 365: Morning Hour

Thursday, August 16, 2012

Morning Hour

Mornings are seriously the best times to shoot. The light seems to create this cinematic imagery that I am so fond of. The apartment complex glowed beautifully. I actually took out my 60D this time and the results were pleasing. I don't think I could give up this camera. It's done to many good things.

Vlog #49: High Street Low Street: A Book of Seoul

Day 227 of 365: On My Spare Time

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

On My Spare Time

During the week I'm always out there photographing something. Some days it's easy and some days are hard, but I absolutely do the best I can to photograph things that appeal to me. Lately landscapes and architecture have been a big factor in my work as of late. It's hard to find a place to just sit on a corner and photograph people on the street. But that's what you get when you live in a place that sort of sits in a lot of trees. Today's post is just that. I drive around, find something I like and then take a little bit of time to shoot it. I do this on my "Spare Time."

Day 226 of 365: Doom Crew x Summer Collection Part 2

Monday, August 13, 2012

Doom Crew x Summer Collection Part 2

I don't always wear crewnecks.. but when I do it's Dark Arts Doom Crew. Stay Youthanized my friends.

Beautiful Losers: A Documentary on Street Culture

Just today I finally got around watching this film. It was recommended by my old Photo History instructor Lynne Ingersol who is still teaching at the Academy of Art University. Artists such as Ed Templeton and Mike Mills talk about their experiences about growing up as an outcast and understanding the term "DIY." As a photographer I focus on these things not because it's amazing, but to understand their integrity and their motivation to keep creating. It's ugly. It's beautiful. It's passionate. And it's stressful. Not matter what they kept doing something than doing nothing. You can watch the film on full stream by clicking the link below.

Day 223 of 365: Rain or Shine New York Times

Friday, August 10, 2012

Rain or Shine New York Times

It was a fun and exhausting day as I had headed home from my two day stay in New York. Working there just makes me feel I'm doing things and really making it out there. Again... since I didn't get much shooting in during work I did the best I could to embrace whatever was available before work and during lunch. The block was hott. I'm satisfied.

Day 222 of 365: New York in the Morning

Thursday, August 9, 2012

New York Through the Morning

Today was alright. Didn't have much time to shoot around. Results might be better tomorrow

Day 221 of 365: Doom Crew x Summer Collection Part 1

Wednesday, August 8, 2012

Doom Crew x Summer Collection Part 1

I just got this in the mail today. Now.. remember that when it comes to DA/DC I seem to show it in two parts. In a couple of days I will be sporting the sweater. Stay tuned.

Day 220 of 365: Overcast

Tuesday, August 7, 2012

Honestly I enjoy doing this kind of photography. And to think that all of it is shot with a G12. Hmm.... makes you wonder.

Vlog #48: Current State of Mind / Shoutouts to Friends

Dust Mag #3 Release Party

Among the places I know, along with the people I've met, the talent in San Francisco is astonishing. A few of the people from Dust Mag are curating a special event on the 30th of August. Photographers such as Victor Prieto, Unni Krishnan, Theo Slavin, and Irwin Lewis to name a few will be attending along with Dust Mag contributors. Sad that I won't be there to attend the party, but if you guys are currently residing in Bay Area or live near come out and support the zine. I am proud of these guys and hope that they will continue making great work!

You can check out more details on the Facebook Events.

At the Dunes - A Sean Custer Story

If you've been around my blog awhile you know that Sean Custer is not only a friend, but a big influence in my work. A known photographer in my circle he recently started some landscape documentary projects. This project focuses on the unique house designs that was built so many years ago. Still this set of images embodies the Sean Custer character. Lovin' the shots my friend. Keep em coming.

Day 219 of 365: Home Alone

Monday, August 6, 2012

Home Alone

The majority of the day was spent sleeping. Yes... I slept a lot today. For some reason sleep hasn't been good lately. Being at home the majority of the day sucks. I can't go out since I have to save money. It's sort of driving me crazy. I'll wait though. I have this coming Thursday to look forward to.

Day 218 of 365: Case of the Sunday's

Sunday, August 5, 2012

Case of the Sunday's

Didn't do much. Watched tennis, ate, and tried to take good pictures

Day 217 of 365: Shadow Design

Saturday, August 4, 2012

Shadow Design

Today was chill as me and my girl relaxed. Weekends are very slow so I have to think a little harder when it comes to my 365 entries. As the day went on hanging out with the girl I had been imagining certain things that I could create as a series of photos. Over lunch, over tea, and small walks around the complex I began to think about what I could do to make that happen. After taking pictures of my cat and girlfriend and thinking about Daido Moriyama compositions it struck me..... shadow designs.... stay tuned....

Day 216 of 365: A Small Walk

Friday, August 3, 2012

A Small Walk

I walked a bit today to do some shooting. The walk was alright. I think I came around the area at the wrong time of the day. The light wasn't in my favor and I'm sure if I had just left the apartment earlier these shots would've been a bit better. Eh.. oh well..

Joe Canoza (Back in the Day)

Joe Canoza

I know that I blogged about him before, but I recently found these images, scanned them, and had contemplated on when I should put it up. I finally got around to posting these. And now... I work with him in New York. Interesting how things work out when you grow older.

Day 215 of 365: Inside/Out

Thursday, August 2, 2012

After watching that documentary on Daido Moriyama I had some motivation to shoot again. First I shot around the apartment. The light was good today so certain things seemed interesting enough to shoot. I then went ahead and drove a bit and photographed at a building that has been abandoned for quite some time. During the process I thought about my angles, looked through the viewfinder, and attempted to feel out each image I took. It felt awesome. I hope tomorrow brings the same results.

Lately photography has been somewhat difficult to comprehend as most of my blogs haven't been too thrilling. I've been falling off the wagon creatively and haven't been motivated to shoot. I remembered hearing this mans name, Daido Moriyama, for awhile , but I never gave the photographer a chance until now. I just finished watching the documentary "Near Equal Moryiama Daido" and I was blown away by the work he creates. The footage talks about his process, his thoughts on photography, analog, digital, personal, and his outlook in life. It's a very interesting story. His work has inspired me and I am so motivated to shoot again. Check out the video above and his photographs below!

Day 214 of 365: Out and About

Wednesday, August 1, 2012

Out and About

Another day and another blog post. Not much happened. Had lunch with my girlfriend and her postdocs at a vegetarian restaurant, drove around and hung out at home. Nothing much.. just another day in the life of Arthur Bueno.
