P.I.2014.1-8

Donna / Samal, Davao, Philippines / January 2014

After the wedding we ended up taking a group trip with the friends and family out to the sea. We hit Samal where we did some eats and hangouts in the water. It was an incredible time. I've never swam in water as clear and crisp. It was a day to remember. I want to go back.

It's been a long time coming, but I've managed to get the portfolio up and running. I'm still thinking about adding a couple of more things. For now check it out and let me know what you think.

Pan de Sal / Tagum, Mindanao, Philippines / January 2014

I'm not sure if this shot was taken before or after the wedding, but it was breakfast almost every morning. Since a few of us are vegetarians (myself included) this bread was the only thing we could eat without any question. You have to eat this warm with butter. It's amazing.

Damnit.. I was trying to get away from making a profile, but I had decided to try it out. And I'm not gonna lie... It's pretty damn cool. It really helps to just look at pictures and not look at extensive reads on a dashboard. I'll make the best of it. And to think.. I made a post about this subject. Thoughts can change really quickly.... *sigh*

At the Beach / Tagum, Mindanao, Philippines / January 2014

Some details from our hangout in the park. It was raining most of the time and I had an annoying cough I couldn't hold. My whole body ached too. Not a very good time for me, but I made the best of it. These were some of the details of that day. I didn't do much, but shoot and observe. Interesting nonetheless.

Ivy / Tagum, Mindanao, Philippines / December 2013

This little girl was adopted to the family a long time ago. I don't remember what the story was from that, but I do know that she makes our family very proud. She's a cute one. Will definitely bloom into something beautiful. Very photogenic. Beautiful smile. It was interesting how she wasn't very shy around me.

Hilary Sander / Tagum, Mindanao, Philippines / December 2013

Happy Valentines Day everyone! Thought it was appropriate to show these images today. Hilary was one of the bridesmaids for the wedding that happened last month. I wanted to let her know that I really appreciate what she did for us supporting me and wife on our special day.

She's shy around me when it comes to the camera. I think that this is a pretty good representation of that. She has a grace in that though. Very interesting way of how she composes her self to others.

Philippine Rider / Davao, Mindanao, Philippines / December 2013

I would see filipino's in a pack of twenty try to fit into a small truck. I would see filipino's ride on top of the Jeepney Buses. I would see them ride three to four family members on a bike just to save time for the trip. My culture can easily fit these individuals in such small spaces. Makes you wonder how American Society deals with this sort of problem.

Bike Rides in the Rain / Tagum, Mindanao, Philippines / January 2013

At one point Tagum had gone through a bit of rain then later escalating to a flood. This was probably days before. I think we did some errands around the town or had hung out at a swimming pool resort. And it rained quite a bit, but it wasn't cold. When we were riding on the truck I happened to see this woman struggle in the back of the bike by using the plastic back to avoid the rain. I'm not sure if she was successful at the end of her destination, but let me tell you.. that rain was pretty brutal.

Angelie & Arlene / Tagum, Mindanao, Philippines / January 2014

These are my cousins who are from Morong, Bataan. I love these two very much and I hope I get to see them again soon. They are what the family is all about. They certainly built the character of how our family is represented.

Connecticut Snow Storms / Middletown - West Hartford, CT / 2012

It's snowing right now and the delay to go to work is at 10. By this time I'm hoping that I don't have to work so I can stay and just edit more photographs to batch for the next few weeks of posts.

Anyway, awhile back I had the opportunity to develop some negatives that have been sitting in my dresser for a long period of time. I had scanned and saved them to my external which had two of these photographs sitting there. I've been contemplating on posting these photographs till now. The snow is quickly piling up. There's just so much of it. I can't even begin to wonder how I can see myself heading to working under these conditions. It's scary to drive in the snow. It really is. If it were me living in the city with a way to use public trains to get to work I'd be fine doing so, but driving in these conditions are just scary.

These two images were actually from a commute from work to my apartment. That was a long drive home and that's definitely something I can't get used to.

CURRENT WORK SIGHTINGS

Awesome to know that Michael Behlen has received a lot of positive feedback from his zine Searching for Stillness. I'm proud to know that his work is finally getting the recognition it deserves.

With the reviews I've read so far the characters and locations of Mike's pictures really embody the true nature of his life. The work is raw, with no opportunity for manipulation, that display's this atmosphere that defines the California life aesthetic. This zine speaks truthfully of Mike's personality and the way he perceives his subjects. Good work Mike. Hopefully the next book you release will be equally amazing.
