Day 182 of 365: Airshow Then Dinner

Saturday, June 30, 2012

Airshow then Dinner

Donna and I came to visit her parents for the weekend and arrived just last night. We were given some tickets to the airshow in New Hampshire from Donna's mom. We arrived there at around 9 something to get some seats in the booth that we were V.I.P'd in. It was a pretty rad show, but we both ended up leaving early since we were sleepy and didn't want to get stuck in traffic toward the end of the show. After that we met up with Donna's parents at their house, went to church, and then ate at some Vietnamese restaurant. The day was great.

Joe Canoza

Joe Canoza

I've known this man for years. It's been awhile since I've seen him and just recently we got in touch. I now work with him as a freelance digital technician at Saks Fifth Avenue and it has been an incredible experience so far. Knowing Joe he's always been the ambitious, unfiltered, party animal. His photographs speak many languages and have a compelling sense of mood and light. He's a medium format photographer. He loves to blow up his images to half wall sizes. Currently he's not showing much of his work. I was lucky enough to photograph a small portion of what he's working on. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Morning Brooklyn

I had stayed the night at Joe Canoza's pad since I had work. It was a good morning waking up to a beautiful sunrise. Joe has a pretty sweet spot in Brooklyn which you can oversee a good portion of the city. Hung out in the morning... chilled.. and went to work. That is all.

Streets Before Work

Before heading to work in NYC I had the opportunity to photograph the morning. This is pretty much the only time of the day I have good photographs it seems. It's the best light and it really captures the a person's moment. I'm not sure if I want to make a series out of this, but we will see.

During the run at Gay Pride NYC I had initially planned to make a video on how I would photograph the street. Unfortunately (and being the dummy I am) I had accidentally deleted the videos files. I decided to hold off much of the images and saved it for this morning. This is the street side of pride... a style I'm very much familiar with.

Gay Pride Parade NYC

This was probably one of the best weekends I've had in awhile all because of my girlfriend taking me to New York for the weekend. To close it out Donna, DJ, and I went to the Gay Pride Parade. It was a lot harder to shoot since I didn't have the access to be inside the action. Other than that there were a few things I saw that was pretty interesting. Though that we didn't stay too long I had a blast. Awesome weekend....

Day 175 of 365: Hello New York

Saturday, June 23, 2012

Hello New York

For the weekend Donna and I decided to hang out with her brother D.J. in Brooklyn, New York. We spent most of our time in Manhattan today, but will be doing other things tonight. I'm blogging early again just for the sake of getting it done before I head out to another adventure in the city. Trust me. This Monday I have a bunch of work I will be gathering up to post so stay tuned. Other than that enjoy!

Getting it Done

This position has been on repeat for over the last few weeks, trying to find jobs, looking for photographers to work with, and really engaging material on this blog. It's coming along as I am applying to many positions. I may have a lead with Gus Powell as he's a photographer that's part of a group collective In-Public which features some of the best street photographers in the modern age. Hopefully I can work for him as an intern or assistant and get my photography career rollin'. We will see.

By the way. I tried to photograph in New Jersey... got nothin.. Absoluetly nothin...

Flowers

Note: I will be heading to New Jersey today to photograph one of the last graduations of the season. It's about 3 hours away and won't be home until after the deadline. I decided to do a quick post before heading out. I will be shooting some stuff before work and hopefully post it tonight or tomorrow. Stay tuned.

There was a point of the year I wanted to start photographing dinner table flowers using harsh light. It's eerie and depressing and something I wanted to do in a series somehow. Maybe something I will try to gather up sometime soon. We will see...

Runnin' and Shootin

I shot the clouds before my graduation gig I had to shoot today, but for the rest of the images I took them while running through a pathway I take when I want to tire out my dog. It was a hot day today. Sweaty, sticky, and downright humid. Oh well.. welcome to the east coast I guess.

Should You Become a Professional Photographer

Screen shot 2012-06-20 at 8.50.02 AM

Much debate has overcome me as the older generation have experienced great losses in their career. Photography has many disadvantages, but amazing advantages in the aspects of its art and its criticism. Though we can argue the many aspects of the medium should it be something we can see as a career?

Portraits in the Complex

Today I got the opportunity to photograph my girlfriend with a new outfit she had purchased from Free People. The shoot was pretty fun, but I think I need to be a little bit better on where I choose my locations. I haven't done portraits in awhile, so having the chance to photograph a person (let alone my girlfriend) was refreshing. I used a speedlite for this session. I'm loving it and will be doing more of this stuff in the near future.

I decided to break out my speedlite skills and try to imitate morning light. This was a technique that I learned from my professor Chris Hardy for Location Lighting class. Morning light has always been a big thing to me. I love the color, the angle, and the quality it brings. It's intimate, beautiful, and calm. Lovin' it.

Bike Crew

As I did my errands for the day I happened to pass up a small gathering of bikers at some burger joint. I don't know any of these people, but I went ahead and parked my car next to them and asked if I could take their pictures. It was short and sweet. I wanted to see if I still had my charm towards a crew of muscle. Turned out they were rad people. Love it.

Deanna Templeton

Much like her husband Deanna is also a photographer who photographs much of the youth. I've been following her work for a little while and I'm a big fan. As of late her blogs have consisted of band photography and street photography. Sort of the style of photography that I'm very much into. Though that both her and her husband photograph similar subjects Deanna's way of shooting is much different. Sure that the subject matter may be similar, but I can tell that she's looking for something extra in her photos... sort of a poetic, yet, honest approach of what she envisions. About a few years ago she recently had an exhibition titled "Scratch My Name In Your Arm." A series about women who use their bodies as autograph books. Check out her BLOG which is updated at least every few weeks. Below are only samples of her work that I'm liking right now.

Leica Video About Ed Templeton

Hey guys. Check out this video of Ed Templeton. Owner and former skater for the brand Toy Machine he's been quite buzz among photographers in my scene. I've known of him at the age of 13 skating with friends in my hometown. Little did I know that he's also a photographer that had documented much of the youth in the 90's and early 2000's. I love his work and would love to acquire a copy of whatever he has available. I would love to shoot around with him and get a sense of how he shoots through the frame. Some of his work can be found at the Tiny Vices website along with his blog at Toy Machine. Check it out!

In Casino, Out of MInd

In Casino, Out of Mind

Hours before heading out to San Francisco for my flight to Connecticut I decided to do a one night only project at the Tachi Palace in Lemoore, Ca. In this project I wanted to take pictures of the casino people in the most candid fashion. It's weird... seeing how lost they can get, so focused on making easy money, sitting there... waiting for the big bucks to come in. The odds are against them, but they continue to stay there waiting for the jackpot to ring. With the Canon G12 I was able to sneak these shots without getting caught. It was pretty depressing since most of these people will continue doing this for the rest of their life.

Crappy Trees

It's a rainy day, the light sucks, and there wasn't much to photograph. I did go to Hartford again to check out this camera store. Before heading there I did some shooting. Didn't get shit... all of it sucked. But then later in the day I walked my dog and started looking into the forestry area of my apartment complex. I thought about Brian Kanagaki (owner of HVMAN DVST and guitarist of Loma Prieta) and how he uses his pictures of leaves, trees, and plain old things to his advantage for his designs. So... I decided to try and attempt that same thing. I think I want to do more of it..

I will be going back shooting and compiling more material in support of this Funhouse they are currently building. For now... Check out the small details...

Gay Pride Parade Boston

Today was interesting. Refreshing from all the landscape, still life, morning light photography I've been doing for the past few days. It's been a minute since I've seen some action happen and what better way to see it through a community gathering round to represent their pride. Boston's Gay Pride Parade was pretty damn electric. I'm liking the feel of the community... very much together with what they do. I don't know what else to say other than giving props to the Gay Community really doing it up. You guys rocked it!

10 Reasons Why You Should Do a 365 Project

365 PROJECT

It's June and already I've been through many changes over these past six months. Since starting this project I'm certain that photography is not only a passion, but an obsession. I cannot leave the house without a camera whether it'd be my point and shoots, rangefinders, or DSLR's. The idea that I could capture SOMETHING keeps me motivated. Making Runs in a Small Town

My truck got shipped here from California so it's a little easier to go out and shoot. I prefer to walk to be honest, but for now driving is the only solution to my photographic needs. This town doesn't have much action so I have some adjusting to do. Though there are lots of landscapes, colors, and historical buildings I am more into photographing people. Today I decided to bring my DSLR and photograph some errands I did. Tomorrow I will be in Hartford so hopefully more action will be present there.
